Comets News · T&F Team State Summary

Only the top track and field programs got to compete against each other on Saturday in Clare, MI and the Hanover-Horton teams were one of those programs.  The boy’s team finished 10th and the girls 12th on the day.  What makes this meet so appealing and enjoyable is the fact that every team member got to compete and earn points toward the team score.  Most events had over 30 athletes so placing in the top 10 is a big achievement.

Winning events were Judy Rector in the 3200, Landon Melling in the 800, and Evan Gray in the pole vault.  Other top ten performers were Chance Cauthon in the pole vault (2nd), the boys 4×400 relay (Dakota Manee, Shane Sauber, Donovon Kennedy, Melling) in 3rd, Bo Shepherd in the 1600 (4th), Noah Flint in the 3200 (4th), Aislyn Williams and Abbe Beneke in the high jump (tie 5th), the boys 4×200 relay (Manee, Sauber, Kennedy, Cauthon) in 5th, Kimmy Burk in the pole vault (7th), Kathryn Childs in the 100mH (7th), Andy Swihart in the 1600 (7th), the girls 4×200 relay (Ella Cure, Reagan Fazekas, Beneke, Williams) in 7th, Chandler Garcia-Vance in the discus (8th), Kyle Owen in the 200 (10th), the boys 4×800 relay (Logan Shepherd, Drew Jordon, Richard Haislip, Ethan Stebing) in 10th, and the girls 4×100 relay (Ashlin Schnell, Katie Mortimer, Searah Bowker, Beneke) in 10th.

The 2018 Comets track and field teams are Cascade Conference Champions together for the second time in school history.  Both teams finished undefeated during the regular season and won the conference meet on Tuesday at East Jackson HS.  This is the 4th consecutive year for the boys and 2nd in three years for the girls.  There were 20 new PRs set on the evening and several outstanding performances that were necessary to capture the title outright.  The girl’s team had 8 event conference champions while the boys had 7 event champions.

Judy Rector won the iron man (800, 1600, 3200, 4×800 relay) along with her relay teammates of Krissy Johnson, Lindsay Vansumeren, and Searah Bowker.  Kimmy Burk won the pole vault, Abby Beneke won the high jump, the 4×400 relay team (Ella Cure, Reagan Fazekas, Burk, Vansumeren) and the 4×200 relay team (Aislyn Williams, Beneke, Cure, Fazekas) also won.  Second place finishers were Williams in the HJ, Fazekas in the 400 and 200, and Kathryn Childs in the 100mH.  Ashlin Schnell placed third in the 300mH to complete the medal winners.

Landon Melling was conference champion in the 800, 1600, and a member of the 4×800 relay along with his relay teammates of Hunter Miller, Andy Swihart, and Dean Reynolds.  Dakota Manee won the 200, Bo Shepherd won the 3200, Chance Cauthon won the pole vault, and the 4×400 relay team (Donovon Kennedy, Kyle Owen, Shane Sauber, Manee) won to earn the conference title.  Second place finishers were Manee in the 100 and 400, Shepherd in the 1600, Melling in the 3200, Evan Gray in the pole vault, and Chandler Garcia-Vance in the discus.  Third place finishers were Garcia-Vance in the shot put with a new PR, Noah Flint in the 3200, Swihart in the 1600, and Cauthon in the 200 to complete the medal winners.

Amazing job by all and it was a total team victory that required every point for the championship title.  This group of student-athletes has approached each team goal with determination and continue to improve daily.  Both teams now get ready for the MITCA Team State meet at Clare HS on Saturday with aspirations to achieve even more PRs.  Way to go Comets!!!
